ST HELENS boxer Phil Molyneux scored a hard fought points victory over Bradford rival Donovan Davey at the St Andrews Sporting Club, Glasgow.
Phil boxed well during the six-round contest setting a good fast pace and landing the much more solid and eye-catching punches. However, at times a lack of concentration allowed his opponent to come back into the fight and this was reflected in the referee's score of 59 points - 58 points, giving Phil a winning margin of two rounds.
This summer has seen a great deal of change for Phil's Ringwise boxing team with a move to a new gym in St Helens and an increase in the size of the team through a number of amateur boxers signing professional contracts.
Phil's trainer, Damian Jones, said: "The opening of the Colloseum Fitness Studio on Sutton Road, St Helens has provided us with a base in the town where we can train our boxers meaning that our time is now spent equally between Warrington and St Helens. "The Colloseum has also provided Phil Molyneux with a gym that is much more accessible to him than our gym in Warrington, reducing his training and travelling expenses and enabling him to spend more time in the gym that he did last year, and I have no doubt that this is one of the reasons why his fitness and stamina have improved so dramatically during the summer.
"This time last year when Phil turned professional I stated that I felt there was a great deal of potential talent among the amateur boxers of the St Helens area and I am hoping that by relocating our team to the town we may be able to encourage some of this talent to join Phil and our other boxers on the professional circuit."
