A JOINER has lost three fingers after slicing into his hand with a circular saw in a horrific accident at his Accrington home.

Peter Ryan, 40, was in the garage sawing through frozen dog meat when the blade cut into all the fingers on his right hand.

He staggered in shock to a neighbour's house with blood pouring from the wounds.

They wrapped a towel around the hand and comforted Mr Ryan, who was semi-conscious, until paramedics arrived.

The father-of-three, of Lindadale Close, in Accrington, was taken to Blackburn Infirmary before being transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital.

His condition was described as "comfortable" by a spokeswoman at the hospital where he was awaiting an operation.

His wife, Teresa, who was out when the accident happened, said : "He has lost three fingers and they are operating to tidy his hand up. "It was so sudden he never felt anything but the pain comes later and they have given him morphine."

Neighbour Eddie Wright, who called an ambulance, said: "They asked me on the phone to have a look around for his fingers and put them in a bag but there was just a lot of blood.

"His hand was covered in blood and his fingers were just hanging on underneath.

"He was walking about in shock and we tried to lay him down on a bench."

Mr Ryan works at Marshalls brickworks, in Accrington.

Mr Wright said" "He's an excellent joiner. There's nothing he can't do."

Paramedic Mark Cox and ambulance technician David Fielding, from Altham ambulance station, treated him at the scene yesterday teatime before taking him to Blackburn Infirmary.

Mr Cox said: "He was so badly shocked he was semi-conscious."
