CHRIS Sutton was today named in Glenn Hoddle's England squad for next week's game against Cameroon.

The Blackburn Rovers striker's sizzling form this season has earned him everyone's praise and finally he appears to have impressed the man who really matters - England coach Glenn Hoddle.

Joint top scorer in the Premiership with 10 League goals, the £5 million man has been personally checked by Hoddle on more than one occasion this season.

And the England chief has now given Sutton the chance to prove what he can do.

But there was disappointment for other Rovers players notably Tim Flowers.

The Ewood keeper has come back strongly from pre-season surgery to produce his best form.

But Hoddle has chosen Tottenham's Ian Walker and Leeds keeper Nigel Martyn along with regular David Seaman.

Stuart Ripley, Jason Wilcox, who have both been capped, and Tim Sherwood, who has been on the England bench, were overlooked this time but may come into Hoddle's thinking during the friendlies to come before next summer's World Cup finals.

Sutton will face serious competition for a place in the starting line-up.

Manchester United striker Andy Cole was also given a recall by Hoddle.

Middlesbrough forward Paul Merson, a late call-up for the draw in Italy at the start of the month, is retained and there is also a place for West Ham defender Rio Ferdinand, even though he is due in action for the England Under-21s against Greece in Crete on Thursday.

Rovers have been drawn at home to Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup second round.
