Blackburn Rovers and the Lancashire Evening Telegraph today brought a smile back to the face of road accident victim Steven McLaughlin.
Steven, 10, suffered a fractured skull and multiple injuries when he was involved in a collision with a car near his home in Bastwell Road, Blackburn.
Despite his injuries, the football and karate-mad youngster was more concerned about his cherished signed Blackburn Rovers shirt being cut by paramedics treating him at the scene.
So the Lancashire Evening Telegraph decided to brighten up the youngster's day in hospital and organised a surprise with the help of Ewood Park staff. Steven now has a new shirt, autographed goodies and the chance to meet his heroes, Chris Sutton and Colin Hendry, when he leaves Blackburn Royal Infirmary.
His dad Paul said: "I'd like to say a big thank-you to the Telegraph and Rovers and the nurses on Ward 10 at the hospital, who have been great."
Duncan Martin, head of merchandise for Rovers, said: "Once Steven's up and running we'll arrange for Chris and Colin to sign his shirt again. We all wish him the best in his recovery."
The Knuzden Junior School pupil was due to receive his karate brown belt soon. But his right arm was shattered and a special pin has been inserted to keep it in place.
He said: "This is brilliant. I can't wait for my friends to hear about this."
