REGARDING your story about the battle between Stanley House Veterinary Surgery and McDonald's for a land site in Colne (LET, November 10), there are several arguments on both sides of this case but, as your article says, the council has a duty to get as much as they can for the land.
Stanley House vets want the land to build larger premises to serve more larger animals under one roof. The council is looking seriously at their offer and say it will not affect the traffic flow as much as McDonald's.
But, how many new jobs would the vets surgery provide? It would not serve all the people, only those with animals and the vets want to offer £90,000 for the land.
McDonald's want the land for a drive-in. This would serve all the people who want a meal, regardless of whether they had animals or not.
How many new jobs would be created by McDonald's?
I realise McDonald's could cause a problem for a few people in Pendle but, surely, it would benefit the many and, as well as this, McDonald's is offering over twice as much for the land - more than £200,000.
The only alternative that I can see is that Stanley House vets should match McDonald's offer and if they cannot do that, the land should go to McDonald's.
After all, the money from this land will benefit the residents of Pendle and why should the people of Pendle settle for £90,000 when they can get £200,000?
