CARMEL College in Eccleston has just been awarded the title of 'Associate College' after joining academic forces with the University of Liverpool.

For the past three years, the college and university have operated successful degree courses in Science and Engineering, Computer Information Systems and Biological Sciences and lecturers are hoping this new partnership status, achieved in October, will mean improved access to higher education for local students.

In addition, the college plan to expand the number of courses on offer and students have access to all the university's facilities.

College principal, Peter Rushton said: "This is a very exciting development. It will provide more opportunities for local people to progress and achieve prestigious qualifications."

And it wasn't just the teachers who were pleased with the partnership scheme. Student, Lynn Lalero said: "My A Level grades didn't meet the university requirements and this course has allowed me access to study at the university. It has helped me to restore my confidence. Lessons are conducted in a relaxed and helpful environment and the course is designed to make students as confident and as well prepared as necessary."
