LEIGH MR showed discipline and steel to turn over champions West Hull 21-16.

And they began in a big hurry.

Scrum-half Mike Devine scooped up a loose ball and raced down the field to dive in between the sticks, giving Winston Sarsfield the easiest of goals. Six minutes gone, six points in the bag.

But the powerful Humberside outfit were not going to give it up that easily and they bounced back through Great Britain star Colin Carter.

Miners were constantly under bombardment but looked good as they hit on the break, wing Matt Irwin constantly causing problems.

Heavy tackling saw Stuart Littler in the bloodbin, Lee Stretch and McCulley were the subject of some ferocious illegal tackling. That only served to spur Miners, centres Carl Jones and Damien Fletcher cutting loose to send Sarsfield hurtling away, finally sending Stretch in at the corner.

And Sarsfield added a penalty for 12-4 at the interval, staying ahead with props Nigel Casey and Mark Edwards in mean mood, Lee Lomax tormenting with quickfire breaks, Mike Warburton elusive at stand-off.

Warby hit a drop to set the second half in motion but West Hull blasted in, giving full-back Peter Sharp a hard time in defence.

Sarsfield added another penalty following the dismissal of Carter. But Wests hit a bright spell to put the pressure on MR who desperately needed another score. It came from Sarsfield, side-stepping in from 15 metres before improving from long-range.

The visitors had one last surge to close the score down. But Miners had enough on the scoreboard to extend their unbeaten home run.

LEIGH EAST U10s made hard work of victory at Westbank. Tries from P Seddon, S O'Brien 2, P Hook 2. MoMs Seddon and Hook with good defence from Reynolds, McGuire and Mack.
