ST HELENS Snooker Professional Wayne Brown continues his quest for a place in the worlds top 16 tonight (Thursday).

He is due to open his account against former world champion Dennis Taylor, in the Liverpool Victoria UK Snooker Championships at The Guild Hall Preston.

The season is only just under way, but the 28 year old from Sutton Manor is already riding high after two excellent runs in recent tournaments.

After losing a close game to Mick Price in the last 16 of the Grand Prix in Bournemouth, he came up against Jimmy White in the Benson & Hedges Championships, and again put up a good performance before finally bowing out 5-2.

The Guild Hall Event - which stands second only to the World Championships and Wayne's manager Tony Banbury commented: "It's not just the Hendry's, Ebdon's and O'Sullivan's who can win the tournaments. I believe Wayne will win his first ranking event soon, and there's no reason why this tournament cannot be the one."

Wayne said: "I am very much looking forward to the match with Dennis. Although he may be sliding down the rankings, he is still a dangerous opponent who can score very heavily."

The event is being televised on BBC from Saturday November 22. Should readers wish to know more on Wayne's progress, they can phone Wayne Brown Promotions on St Helens 636147.
