West Park 15 Aldwinians 7 DEFEAT for league leaders Aspull in the Isle of Man and this less than convincing victory over visitors Aldwinians gives West Park a clear two points lead at the top of Thwaites League North West One.
But repeated failure to retain possession after the tackle and also to finish off good approach work made the result much closer than necessary. After early pressure from Park a well rehearsed tap penalty move brought Carl Bibby the opening try. But much territorial advantage gained by good tactical kicking failed to bring additional points as clear cut chances were scorned.
The match began to degenerate into a succession of penalty awards and scrappy play with only a try saving tackle by Chris Glynn prevented Aldwinians opening their score before half-time.
A strong 30-yard run by winger Ian Davies set up a position from which Carl Bibby was able to intercept a misdirected pass to score from 30 yards, Glynn converted to give Park a 12-0 lead which still looked unconvincing as too much possession continued to be lost. Glenn Fletcher came off the bench to replace Tongan Harmon Tu'avao and promptly added a penalty from wide out to increase the lead to 15-0. Carl Bibby again distinguished himself with a try saving tackle but Aldwinians would not be denied and scored straight from a scrum, number nine Tim Bullerworth going over for a try, second row Bob Pownall converted but 15-7 remained the final result.
West Park visit Oldershaw next Saturday and to retain their league leadership will need a much better display.
