ALAN WHALLEY'S WORLD
WHAT a thrill it was for the amateur pedallers of Newton-le-Willows district when they cycled alongside the king of the track.
Reader Reg Chadwick recalls being told by a sporty pensioner, some years ago, about that pre-war visit to Earlestown Viaduct sportsground by the legendary Reg Harris, Britain's world champion sprint cyclist.
It was during the heyday of the Earlestown Cycling Club, and Reg Harris paid a flying visit to town to meet up with one or two of the club members he knew well.
This resulted in club cyclists circuiting the Viaduct running track with Reg acting as pace-maker. That was a time when healthy, fresh-air activities, such as long countryside bike rides, were all the rage. No dissipating tellies and pub pool tables then!
Now, Reg, from Legh Street, Newton, wonders if anyone can put a date to that Reg Harris visit and can perhaps add a few more details.
IF so, drop me a line at: Whalley's World, St Helens Star, YMCA Buildings, Duke Street, St Helens WA10 2HZ.
