THE authorities were warned nearly 20 years ago that a road through two housing estates would become a rat-run.
The late Peter Moorhouse campaigned for a 20mph speed limit and traffic-calming measures when Hillingdon Road, Burnley, was built.
His widow, Lilian, says Peter's prophecy has come true because he was ignored.
"The speed and amount of traffic is horrendous now," said Lilian, whose house is at one the junctions on Hillingdon Road.
"You take your life in your hands when you try to turn on to the road in the morning. And the people who live facing the oncoming traffic must be terrified that a car will over run into their house.
"Peter told them this would happen about 18 years ago. He was always bringing it up with the police - he was the Neighbourhood Watch representative - but no one took any notice.
"When they come to do a survey, they do it at quiet times of the day so they think there's no problem.
"It's not just cars. A lot of waggons use Hillingdon Road to get from Nelson to Harle Syke. They come along here because if they go the other way there's a bad junction where Marsden road meets Briercliffe Road.
"Peter wanted the road to have sleeping policemen all those years ago - and that's what it needs now before there's a terrible accident."
