A GOVERNMENT decision to exempt Formula One from a ban on tobacco advertising in sport has come under fire from health watchdogs in East Lancashire.
The Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Community Health Council is writing to Public Health Minister Tessa Jowell to express its deep concern.
The move to lobby the minister, local MPs and other CHCs was proposed by Labour councillor Sheelagh Delaney, from Hyndburn Borough Council.
The public health report for East Lancashire shows that the area has a higher than average death rate, particularly for heart and lung disease. Coun Delaney said: "My job on the CHC is to represent the health interests of the people in Hyndburn.
"The issue which most concerns me in our area is that one of the major killers is heart disease and one of its major causes is smoking.
"I would encourage members of the public who feel the same way to write to their MP and the minister."
Coun Delaney said the controversy surrounding the donation by Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone had clouded the issue of cigarettes being killers.
She added: "It's about saving lives and dissuading youngsters from smoking ."
The CHC says a period of ten years to find an alternative sponsor is excessive and negates the proposed policy of the European Community on a tobacco advertising ban.
Coun Delaney added: "If they feel it's necessary to suggest some leeway, ten years is certainly too long."
