CHRIS Waddle is looking to his players to repay the loyalty he has shown them by firing Burnley into the second round of the FA Cup and a home tie with non-League Kings Lynn.

The player-manager, still waiting for Gerry Creaney's response to his offer, is mystified as to the loss of confidence which has spread through the ranks.

And he is demanding nothing less than an all-out effort to beat Rotherham at Turf Moor tonight, when the presence of the Sky TV cameras will add a little spice to the first round replay.

Lee Howey has recovered from the bout of flu which kept him out of Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Grimsby and Waddle is able to name five subs tonight.

But his most important concern is how the players approach their task.

"We are working hard and everyone's been training very well. In the sessions we do, the effort is there and the quality is there," he said.

"But, in the games, if it doesn't go for us a lot of players lose their confidence very quickly.

"There's a big prize at stake tonight and they have to roll up their sleeves and work for the 90 minutes.

"I think I am quite loyal to the team but they have got to do that and have some confidence in front of our own crowd." Waddle is also banking on the supporters to get behind the team as they bid to claim a golden opportunity of a big FA Cup pay day.

That might give the manager a boost, for he re-iterated that it is not going to be a case of overnight success at Turf Moor.

But he also knows that the fans demand certain things from the players.

"I knew it was a big job when I came here," said Waddle.

"I would have liked things to have happened a bit quicker but that is something that has been beyond my reach.

"I've had to work slowly and it is obviously going to take a lot more time than I thought."

"People get disappointed but they have to realise that the club's done nothing for a few years.

"I could understand their frustration against Millwall.

"Supporters everywhere will not have a go if they can see players working hard and trying to do the right things.

"It's if they don't see the commitment of players trying to make things happen that they will soon sniff it out and have a moan. "If you are going to fail, then fail doing the right things.

"I don't think the crowd are naive and I understand that frustration is a big word in football.

"Some players respond to this kind of situation, some go under.

"It's important for everyone tonight because we have had a couple of bad results."

Burnley are expected to choose from: Beresford, Brass, Blatherwick, Moore, Weller, Waddle, Cowans, Williams, Smith, Cooke, Barnes, Harrison, Ford, Carr-Lawton, Howey, Vinnicombe, Woods.

Rotherham seem likely to keep the team that won at Scarborough on Saturday, though they were checking three key absentees today before finalising the line-up.

Burly defender Vance Warner and forwards Jason White and Trevor Berry were all missing on Saturday and need to make significant progress to have a chance of playing tonight.

Rotherham are expected to choose from: Mimms, Clark, Hurst, Garner, Knill, Richardson, Hayward, Thompson, Roscoe, Glover, Hudson, Bass, Shuttleworth, Goodwin, Warner, White, Berry.
