LEIGH will move into the transfer market to find a replacement for goalkicking ace Dean Purtill.

Probationary bobby Purtill has decided to take a year off from professional rugby to protect his career chances.

Leigh's leading points scorer for the last two seasons, he told chairman Mick Higgins of his decision over the weekend.

"It didn't come as much of a shock," he said. "Dean had missed several games towards the end of last season because of work commitments.

"He said he had little option but to sit it out until his probationary period is completed. If he was injured during that time while playing professional rugby it could jeopardise his future career in the police force.

"He is bitterly disappointed, but really he took the only sensible option open to him.

"It's a big blow to lose a player of Dean's ability and it's imperative we try to find a replacement, especially one who is top class goalkicker."

Purtill showed he had not lost the scoring knack when he plundered 34 points from three tries and 11 goals as the British Police beat the touring Russian Police at Thrum Hall, Halifax.

Leigh have spoken to half a dozen players released by Warrington with a view to a switch to Hilton Park.

One of them is prop or second row Paul Barrow who is also interesting two Super League clubs.

"The situation is the same with the Warrington lads as it is with the Oldham players who have indicated they would like to join us," added Higgins.

"Until the format for next season is rubber-stamped and agreement reached on the allocation of the Murdoch monies, we're not in a position to make any firm offers to players. All we can do is talk in general terms.

"Hopefully within the next fortnight we'll begin to make some progress on the recruitment front."
