THREE companies from the borough have been awarded a total of more than £230,000 for projects designed to develop new products and processes under the new-look DTI Smart scheme.
Hillborn Engineering of Newton-le-Willows were awarded £45,000 for a feasability study of a floatline vehicle for moving glass. The vehicles are used throughout Europe and carry up to 23 tons of glass on a steel stillage with fixed frames.
Future Safety Ltd. of Neills Road, Bold, were granted £31,782 for a feasability study into personal protection products for workers in several hazardous industries such as mining, quarrying, processing and forestry. The proposed product would provide unimpaired vision whilst meeting requirements of impact resistance, robustness, facial fit and light transmittance.
And Richardson Ltd. of Lancots Lane, Sutton, received £155,160 for development of a project involving the recycling of safety glass interlay - Poly Vinyl Butryal (PVB). PVB waste produced by glass recycling processes is currently landfilled. The company intends to develop the processes and technology to enable cost effective recovery and recycling of PVB.
