DONATIONS to the BBC's annual Children in Need appeal looked set to smash through the £10 million barrier for the first time.
By the time the appeal went off the air £8,735,657 had been pledged with television viewers promising cash at a rate of more than £1 million an hour.
Viewers' generosity won praise from host Terry Wogan at the end of the six-and-a-half-hour marathon.
