TWO schools are set to get permission to build steel security fences around their grounds, in a bid to keep vandals and intruders out in the cold.
Shadsworth Junior School and Darwen's Tullyallen Special School are both likely to get the go-ahead, following disturbing incidents involving armed intruders.
Planning officials are urging councillors on the county's development control sub-committee to pass the two applications.
Several schools in Blackburn and Darwen have already been given permission to install special security fencing, following rising concern over pupil safety.
Shadsworth Junior School, in Arran Avenue, has been campaigning for better security following an incident where a pupil was threatened by an older child with a knife.
The school has also suffered from vandalism and youths driving cars and motorbikes across the playing fields.
Tullyallen decided extra security was needed after a man armed with a machete punched two youngsters at the school.
Head teacher Dominic Wall has also complained about youths fighting on the school grounds and drug addicts congregating on the playing fields.
Both fences would be more than seven feet high and some concern has been raised about the effects on the area.
But other residents have supported the move and written to Lancashire County Council.
The section of fencing at the front of Tullyallen will be about six feet high and have an ornate design.
Both fences will be painted matt green to help them blend in with the school fields.
Lancashire County Council has agreed to fund both schemes and the planning application will be discussed later today at a development control meeting. TWO schools are set to get permission to build steel security fences around their grounds, in a bid to keep vandals and intruders out in the cold.
