EXPERTS fear tight-fisted bosses in Preston could exploit workers looking to make a little extra cash for the festive period.

Statistics released last year showed how low paid some employees were. An average hourly rate of £3.65 was uncovered in the town as well as some jobs paying just £1.92. And this year the Greater Manchester Low Pay Unit, which is studying vacancies on offer in Preston's job centre, fears new statistics could be as stark.

Spokeswoman Shamshad Khan said: "There's no law against low wages. Some businesses take advantage, especially at this time of year because they know people need to earn a bit more."

One man who has experienced years of low wages at the hands of unscrupulous bosses is unemployed Frank Gildert of Hazel Grove, Preston.

He said: "I made the mistake of going into canvassing and working for commission. The company takes the majority and the hard-worker is left with a very small percentage.

"People like me are in a trap. You start to feel the pressure as Christmas approaches, as I'm sure many others are."

Preston council Anti-Poverty Development Officer Julie Walsh said: "We've no power as there's no legislation.

"The council is very much in favour of a minimum wage being set." For debt problems or welfare and benefits advice call 01772 906363 or 01772 906838.
