A RUNDOWN plot of land in the heart of Blackburn is to be turned into a shopping complex.
A Manchester-based firm has applied for planning permission to demolish shops on the corner of Salford and Eanam and replace them with a large building.
Around 20 new jobs will be created when the centre opens for business.
The distinctive glass-fronted property would face Morrisons supermarket and have parking spaces for 49 cars.
The centre would replace a row of shops facing Salford and derelict land in Penny Street.
Talks have been taking place with officials at Blackburn with Darwen Council and planners are backing the application.
DRPH Limited from Old Trafford, Manchester, is hoping to build a shop with 20,000 square feet of shopping space.
The firm has applied for permission to sell electrical and retail items and the application will be considered in the new year.
The council owns part of the site and talks have been taking place with the property section at the town hall.
Planners are keen on the application going ahead. Peter Kuit, head of planning at the council, said: "The site is rundown and a bit of an eyesore.
"A new business moving into the town centre would not only be a boost for Blackburn's economy but will improve the look of the town centre."
