SHOPPERS in Rawtenstall can feel safer when they are collecting their groceries thanks to a new crime prevention initiative.
The scheme is being operated by the town's three major stores, Asda, Kwik Save and Do It All and involves customers being provided with an escort to their vehicles.
A national survey showed 75 per cent of people fear that they will become the victims of crime.
The scheme is primarily aimed at the vulnerable and elderly but also at people who have a very real fear of crime.
A similar project was piloted in Great Yarmouth last winter and the service was deemed a success by everyone who took part.
