JOBS for the boys and girls have been given a boost with a Government-backed project.

Wigan Borough Partnership is one of 35 organisations nationwide to be selected to run a Demonstration Project pilot scheme for improving job prospects of 15 and 16 year olds.

The scheme will improve their employability through an enhanced work experience programme.

Pupils from Hindley Mornington High, who undertook work experience earlier this month, helped others, including pupils from Atherton Green Hall School, plan ahead for their involvement.

Some of the pupils were helped by Lynn Baron, manager of Dorothy Perkins in Debenhams, Wigan.

Wigan Borough Partnership Demonstration Project manager Brenda Brown highlighted the scheme's advantages:"Wigan successfully bid for government funding which, for the first time, will help young people gain NVQ qualifications while undertaking work experience.

"The skills gained are vital giving students an opportunity to prove they can work as part of a team, deal with customers, follow instructions, communicate, show initiative and solve problems.

Maureen Hewitt, of Wigan and Leigh College, emphasised the importance of these skills should the young people progress to college.

The project is financed by the Department for Education and Employment and run in conjunction with 70 pupils from three schools, local businesses and Wigan and Leigh College. It will run for two years with a national evaluation expected to assist in outlining future policies linking education and business.
