STICK a jewel in your navel and get your hips swinging as the exotic art of belly dancing hits Preston.
The eastern form of entertainment is weaving its way into town thanks to Helen Shannon who is starting classes at Woodplumpton Village Hall.
Helen wants women of all shapes, sizes and ages to come forward for the classes - and the plumper you are, the better. The 44-year-old college lecturer said: "You don't have to look like a pencil to join in. In fact, it's better to have a bit of meat on you as movements have more impact.
"Part of the appeal is that people like dressing up. Firstly, they come to class wearing a long skirt, the next time they've gone to a charity shop to buy a silky fringed shawl, then they add dangly earrings!"
The dance also boasts many health benefits, from better backs to bladder control!
Helen explained: "Several people I teach say belly dancing has helped back problems and general fitness - you don't realise you're working muscles."
Helen, from Goldbourne, Wigan, started teaching aerobics 15 years ago and moved into belly dancing in 1992. She also holds Egyptian workshops for primary school pupils.
