DOORS are being opened to homeless youngsters in Preston as a new scheme to take them off the streets gets under way.
Families are being urged to let the youngsters into their homes
under the project organised by national organisation Night Stop who kicked off its recruitment drive at the YMCA, Samuel Street.
They would provide a one-off overnight safe haven for youngsters who have taken to the streets after family disputes and problems.
Allan and Joyce Clarke of Conway Drive, Fulwood are among the first of eight Preston couples to volunteer. Allan, aged 75, is a former probation officer and often came in to contact with young people in trouble.
He said: "Accommodation was an major problem with youngsters. People came back to my house just to talk about their problems.
"I have a wealth of experience as I have three teenage children of my own, and I know family arguments develop out of nothing. It's important we're there for others to make sure they're secure." The first of its kind in Lancashire, Night Stop receives a £25,000 grant from the North West Health Authority for the next three years. It has also applied for a Lottery grant.
Frank Maher, secretary of Night Stop, believes the scheme offers youngsters a secure environment. He said: "Fox Street's shelter and the hotels for the homeless in the town centre are more for adults. We want to keep youngsters out of danger."
Volunteers for the scheme should contact Jane Sumner on 01772 703232.
