SOCCER-MAD dad Darren Pond was put on the spot when his son was born on the same day as a vital football match.
For while wife Rachael was groaning with labour pains, goalie Darren was weighing up whether he'd get to the game on time.
The clock-watching began last Friday morning (November 28) when wife Rachael started having contractions just hours before the finals of a North West five-a-side knock-out. Devoted Darren drove her to Sharoe Green Hospital - but sneaked his soccer kit into the car!
Darren said: "I was worrying about the game all morning. I mentioned it to Rachael who was still in labour but got a nasty look, which wasn't surprising.
"The match was crucial. Our team was the only Preston side to qualify. We'd worked hard and it was our first time in the tournament."
Darren watched baby Elliot finally kick his way into the world before he dashed 30 miles to the Bolton match, changing into his soccer gear in the back of his sister-in-law's car. But the day of drama was far from over for the delighted dad.
Disaster struck after only five minutes of play when Darren made a spectacular save - and broke his finger! Undeterred, he strapped his hand with masking tape and scored the Golden Goal in the quarter final.
The proud dad notched up more goals and his team finished runners-up in the tournament, with Darren being crowned top player.
He said: "Elliot arrived at the perfect time. I was on a high and nothing could stop me. I wish I could play like that all the time."
But the soccer superstar may never be goalie again. Darren's damaged finger has not set properly and could have to be broken again and re-set.
Wife Rachael said: "I was very annoyed about his injured hand, but he won't get out of changing nappies!"
The Ponds, from Deepdale, Preston, also have another child. Little Chloe turns six on Christmas Eve.
