Ruskin Park 8 West Park 24 WEST Park earned their place in the second round of the Lancashire Trophy -but they were made to fight all the way by their neighbours.

A spirited display by Ruskin Park held their NW One visitors West Park to a single point at half-time.

Former green and golds star Mike Orford showed all his old flair making a clean break and chipping ahead to give Bill Thornber a corner flag try. A Loz Pilkington penalty had kept Ruskin in touch in spite of the visitors forward domination. Three penalties by Wests Chris Glynn took him past 100 points in his first season in senior rugby and the promising full-back added a try, a conversion and a fourth penalty after half-time as Ruskin could not stem the tide of West Park attacks.

Paul Bailey's blindside try was the other score with second half substitute Gary Kenwright outstanding and sharing man of the match with Ruskin's Mike Orford.

West Park thus go forward to the Trophy second round to meet the winners of the Warrington versus Didsbury tie next weekend. They have also been drawn to meet Midlands Division One Camp Hill in the NPI Cup round five on January 3 at Red Rocks.
