COUNCILLORS from across the political divide united to fight any plans to axe their maternity units.

A meeting behind closed doors decided on the first steps in the campaign to keep open the units at Accrington Victoria Hospital and Bramley Meade, Whalley.

The secret Accrington town hall summit was the first time Tory-controlled Ribble Valley Council and Labour-led Hyndburn Council had met with a common cause.
