ADRIAN Shurmer (Letters, December 8), seems perturbed that his excellent driving skills are inhibited by measures to slow drivers.
The County Council's Road Casualty Report for 1996 would show him that, in the areas where it has been introduced, traffic-calming has reduced accidents by 21 per cent.
From an average of just over 103 accidents a year, 21 have been prevented.
And on the lengths of road where this has been installed, accidents have been reduced by 25 per cent.
These are the facts that drive our councillors to introduce more traffic-calming measures - not only in Hyndburn, but throughout the country.
Mr Shurmer should accept that too many drivers are selfish and oblivious to others and, in our old-fashioned towns, need to be slowed down. We are all beginning to realise that speed kills.
L WILLAN (Mr), Chatburn Close, Great Harwood.
