Fife Flyers 9 Lancashire Hawks 5 ; Lancashire Hawks 4 Fife Flyers 11
HAWKS had "more reasons" to feel dejected last night as Mark Morrison turned in one of the finest one-man shows seen at the Arena this season to complete a weekend of misery at the hands of Fife, writes PAUL AGNEW.
The Flyers' player-coach was in every way the matchwinner in a one-sided Christmas Cup tie - he went on to score more goals than the Hawks could manage between them.
The quicksilver Canadian, so often a thorn in Hawks side, netted five and chipped in with a couple of assists to earn his side a double.
Hawks had, in fact, given a better account of themselves up in Scotland the previous night, losing in a hard-fought encounter.
Last night they made the mistake of geeing up Morrison and Co by scoring first.
Alan Hough continued his rich vein of form by firing the Lancashire lads ahead on eight minutes before a couple of replies late in the first period handed the initiative to the visitors. Morrison grabbed his first early in period two, but Adrian Lomonaco pulled it back to 2-3 and it was game on. Any hopes Hawks may have had over getting involved in a cut-and-thrust battle soon evaporated as Fife scored three times inside the space of 60 devastating seconds.
By the time Hawks found the net again through Billy Price the contest was out of reach. Morrison really went to town in the final period with three more as Fife cantered home. He was ably assisted by fellow imports Frank Morris (3+2) and Bill Moody (2+0) while Steven King scored one and assisted in six others.
Only consolation for the Hawks was the fact that they managed to keep the names of John Haig and Lee Cowmeadow off the goals chart - Haig twice letting his frustration get the better of him to serve penalty minutes for both roughing and hooking.
Period scores: 1-2, 2-5, 1-4. Scoresheet: Jeff Daniels 1+0, Alan Hough 1+0, Bobby Haig 0+1, Colin Downie 0+1, Billy Price 1+0, Adrian Lomonaco 1+0.
On Saturday, Hawks again found the going tough, but there was another excellent individual effort from Canadian forward Lomonaco who grabbed a hat-trick while player-coach Jimmy Pennycook also chipped in with a brace.
