MRS Thatcher named Cabinet minister Ken Clarke as her inner cities supremo - a job for which Darwen and Rossendale MP David Trippier had been tipped.
Mr Clarke's appointment ended the growing rivalry among senior ministers over who should mastermind the government's fight to revive run-down and derelict inner city areas.
His rivals for the post included Nicholas Ridley, Norman Fowler and Kenneth Baker.
