ALAN WHALLEY'S WORLD
THE cenotaph salute issue, raised by St Helens ex-Serviceman John Oates (Dec. 4) has attracted response from A. J. Reid, chairman of the local branch of the Burma Star Association.
John had protested that the 'eyes right', during the Remembrance Day march-past, was directed at the town hall, rather than towards the cenotaph on the opposite side of the road.
Mr Reid now points out that this is not a direct salute to the mayor, standing with guests on the town hall steps. "But we recognise that, at that moment, he is representing the Queen."
He adds: "I hope that one day we may reverse proceedings to 'eyes left' - with the mayor standing by the cenotaph."
