Haydock 8 Farnworth 20 DEFEAT at the hands of last year's champions was hardly the ideal preparation for Haydock's Silk Cut Challenge Cup encounter with Waterhead this Saturday.
But it could so easily have been a different story.
Haydock dominated the first period, but still trailed 8-6 at the interval. However, Haydock created the majority of chances, but were unable to turn them into points.
Farnworth caught Haydock cold, scoring a converted try in the first two minutes and later added a drop goal.
Haydock roared back and went close through Kelsey and O'Garra.
And they finally opened their account when Haughey chipped over and Bloor was on hand to touch down. Haughey added the conversion.
But another drop goal gave Farnworth an 6-6 lead.
After the interval Haydock continued to go forward. But the Widnes side came into the game a lot more and went further ahead with a converted try.
From the re-start Haydock failed to kick the ball 10 yards a nd from the resultant penalty Farnworth broke the Haydock defence again to make it 20-8.
Best for Haydock were Bloor, Kelsey, Green and Haughey.
