FORMER Conservative councillor Vera Kirkby has died after a brave fight against illness. Mrs Kirkby was elected to the Council in 1987 after serving on councils in the down south and was the leader of the Conservatives from '91 until her resignation in 1997 and represented residents of the Arkholme ward. In November this year she was presented with a certificate for her long and valued service. Cllr Shirley Burns said: "She was the leader of our group for some time and was a very active person who did a lot of work for the community. She will be sorely missed."
