IN reply to the remarks by Mrs J O'Malley (Letters, December 16), as a 'pedestrian' parent who frequents St Francis' School, Blackburn, I was disappointed and amazed that anyone living in the vicinity could actually oppose a pelican crossing.
The parents' protest was a direct result of yet another casualty in Preston Old Road the previous evening and I should add that the child involved was of secondary school age.
But children are not the only ones at risk. What of the elderly lady killed a few weeks ago? Apparently, they are of no concern to Mrs O'Malley. I would also inform her that the demonstration was 'policed' - in that a member of Lancashire Constabulary was present for the duration.
I and people like me want to cross the road in safety as we take out children to and from school. I can only assume that Mrs O'Malley has no children, but if she does, then they must cross that road at their peril too. Does she advocate that a pelican crossing is not necessary?
Mrs O'Malley's resentment is with motorists who block her drive and mount her pavement, not with the humble pedestrian like myself. I suggest she directs her vendetta and her anger against them.
