NOW that the M65 motorway has been completed and the incorrectly-spelt (albeit temporary) sign pointing to 'Haslingdon' has been removed, I note that the exit signs at Junction 5 are informing drivers to travel along the A6177 to Blackburn or Haslingden.

All maps, to my knowledge, show this road as the B6232 Haslingden road, which runs from Blackburn to Haslingden (known locally as the Grane Road).

The only remaining reference to the B6232 is at the bottom of Lower Audley Street in Blackburn. I cannot see the new A6177 on any existing map.

Which directions do I tell my customers to follow - the one shown on the map, or the newly invented A6177?

On a more serious point, if one suffers the misfortune of a breakdown or accident, which the Grane road is well known for, do you inform the rescue service that you are on the A6177 or the B6232?

STEVE PRESTON, Operations Manager, Pennine Pump and Tank Co, Haslingden Road, Guide, Blackburn.

Footnote: In our report (LET, December 20), a Lancashire County Council spokesman said that the B6232 had been redesignated, but people had not been notified of the change because of uncertainty over the date of the opening of the M65 extension.
