TRADERS across East Lancashire are set to unite to tackle the controversial A-board ban and other problems.

Moves are being made to revamp the former East Lancashire Chamber of Trade to add more clout to calls for action.

It is planned that the new group, which hasn't yet been named, will meet informally on a quarterly basis at venues throughout the area.

The plan is the brainchild of Blackburn Chamber of Trade president David Cottam, who said traders sharing common problems would have more influence.

"The former East Lancashire Chamber of Trade was based in Preston, but the new group won't be as formal as that. It will meet quarterly on an informal basis to share problems and ideas.

"If we can get together to deal with particular problems, such as the ban on A-boards, then we will have more power," he said.

Letters were sent to chambers of trade throughout East Lancs and Mr Cottam said feedback had been positive.

"We are expecting a good turnout at the first meeting later this month in Burnley," he said.

The ban on A-boards outside shop and business premises has caused outrage across the county since it was imposed last year.

Traders face fines and confiscation if they fail to abide by the regulations.
