FORMER Rovers star David Whelan today brought glad Christmas tidings to the City!

The JJB Sports tycoon revealed that trading in the chain over the festive period in its stores had been very strong.

The company reported a 47 per cent surge in turnover for the six weeks to December 28 and a 56 per cent rise for the 48 weeks to the end of 1997, against 1996 figures.

Its statement will help dispel fears of a slowdown among retailers in December.

JJB said demand for branded products remained high and during the 48 weeks JJB opened 45 stores and closed 10 as part of a relocation programme.

By the end of 1997, JJB said 202 branches were in operation with 26 high-street and 41 out-of-town superstores. This was up on last January's total of 167 shops.

Mr Whelan said the "satisfactory outcome" to the current year would give the company a "solid base" to achieve further progress in 1998.
