THE present maximum alcohol level permitted by law for drivers has always seemed to me very reasonable and has for many years been treated with respect by millions of motorists.
Moderate enjoyment of alcohol is one of the lawful pleasures of civilised society, and a draconian zero limit would criminalise the large proportion of responsible drivers who deliberately and conscientiously restrict their intake before taking the wheel.
I have every sympathy with people who have lost loved ones in drink-related accidents, but I fear that reducing the limit for everyone will not prevent further tragedies being caused by the criminal irresponsibility of a few, who must be made to suffer more severe penalties.
