WHY won't Lancashire police tell us how many of the 13,000 breath tests recently given proved positive, and how many were either slightly or seriously over the limit?
Can it be that they prefer not to reveal how many of the 13,000 drivers had their right to travel on the highway needlessly impeded?
There is a substantial difference between the "drink driver" and the drunk driver, and it is time that the hysteria over so-called drink-driving was abated.
Equally significant as factors involved in the causation of accidents are age, intelligence and temperament.
But we hear no demands from such as Mr G Smith (Letters, January 5), for the lifetime banning of aggressive teenage drivers who can barely write their name.
A sense of proportion is desirable. There are more deaths annually from accidents in the home than on the road.
Why do we not hear from those judges who a few months ago were protesting about being compelled to award minimum sentences?
Any driver banned for 12 months for being two or three milligrams over the limit, while another driver exceeding the limit by 30 or 40 milligrams gets the same sentence, would be glad of their support.
