A THREE-YEAR £670,000 scheme to improve road safety in Burnley will get the green light from county councillors this week - providing the local council agrees to extra measures.
The scheme is for the Stoneyholme and Daneshouse area, where between 1985 and 1995 there were 343 accidents.
A report to the county council's highways and transportation committee, which meets on Wednesday says the improvements should go ahead as long as several additions to the design of the safety scheme are agreed by Burnley Council.
These include a "speed reducing" feature for traffic entering the area along Hebrew Road and Abel Street, closure of Oldhall Street on the east side of Abel Street and the construction of a mini roundabout at the junction, and the narrowing of Abel Street near to Oldhall Street to only allow traffic through in one direction at a time.
The report also recommends that if these extra measures are not included in the scheme the county council's general purposes sub-committee should reconsider the matter and take any appropriate action.
The cost of the road safety scheme will be met from £3.2 million of Challenge Fund money to fund wider improvements to the living and working conditions in the area. Road safety work is due to start this year.
