A JOBS boost could be in the pipeline for Rossendale after it was announced that a new Tesco supermarket could create 370 jobs
The supermarket giant has confirmed plans to open a new superstore at a site at Newhallhey, Rawtenstall.
The firm has struck a deal with Rossendale firm Hurstwood Developments, which has submitted a planning application for the 65,000 sq ft store and 400 car park spaces.
"We are delighted to be working with Hurstwood on this project," said Tesco spokesman Martin Venning.
"And we look forward to working in partnership with other local organisations in order to ensure this development produces the broadest possible benefits to the local community."
The firm said in addition to the 370 jobs it expects to create if the plans are approved by Rossendale Council, the development is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy.
And John Ashworth, chairman of Hurstwood Developments, said he believed the move would encourage more shops to move into the area.
"As a major commercial stakeholder in Rawtenstall, we believe the prospect of the Tesco store is an exciting opportunity for the area.
"This move will encourage other new shops to come Rawtenstall town centre. These initiatives will help to create new opportunities for our young people and prevent shoppers having to drive to Bury or Burnley if they want more choice for food shopping."
Tesco said it would start a consultation exercise with residents within the next few days.
The original planning application for the site was submitted by Hurstwood to Rossendale Council in 1996. It is part of a mixed retail development on the site.
