THERE was a special surprise in the New Year's honours list for Blackpool Pleasure Beach boss Geoffrey Thompson - in the shape of an OBE.

The managing director of Britain's top fun park has earned the accolade for his services to the tourism industry and it follows hot on the heels of his Outstanding Contribution to English Tourism Award, picked up at the end of last year.

In fact, his contribution to tourism knows no bounds, having previously served as a director of the English Tourist Board, chairman of the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions and president of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

A delighted Mr Thompson, who in his own words has been at the Pleasure Beach for "an eternity", says this latest honour is the perfect start to what he predicts will be a very successful 1998.

He told the Citizen: "My first reaction to the news was one of extreme pleasure.

"It shows the Government's recognition of tourism, especially in the North West, and Blackpool Pleasure Beach in particular.

"It many respects it is also reflective of the work by many loyal staff here.

"Receiving an OBE is a superb beginning to 1998 because it will be another record-breaking year at the Pleasure Beach.

"We have new attractions and big marketing ideas which are going to go down well."

Mr Thompson, grandson of the Pleasure Beach's founder William George Bean, took over the reins in 1976 having previously served as a director of the company for 13 years.

He describes the highlight as seeing the Big One up and running, commenting: "It has certainly changed the skyline of Blackpool."
