HIGHWAYS bosses have set aside £25,000 for two Traffic safety schemes.

The projects are part of a £1.4 million package of safety improvements for the county's roads over the last 12 months.

But there are still more than 400 roads waiting for improvements and the County Council is calling for more Government funding.

The aim is to reduce the number of accidents and injuries on the roads and work is likely to start on the two projects within the next wo months.

Around £15,000 is to be spent on Whalley Road in Wilpshire on traffic calming measures and a cycle lane.

The speed limit between Ribchester Road and York Lane, Langho, is also being reduced to 30mph.

Traffic calming costing £10,000 will also be introduced on Blackburn Road in Rishton. The work is the second phase of a long running project aimed at increasing safety for cyclists in the town.

Lancashire's highways and transportation chairman Richard Toon said: "Although I am pleased with the results obtained so far, I am aware that there still many hundreds of sites which require safety works.

"This is a situation which continues to give me cause for concern and we will persevere in our efforts to persuade the Government to increase its capital allocation."

The County Council's spending on roads in Lancashire over the next 12 months has also been set at just under £10 million.

Most of the cash will be spent on maintenance of roads and bridges with some going to minor works.

Coun Toon added: "These spending proposals are the best provision that can be made within the limited resources available.

"I am pleased that we have been able to maintain the level of resources to provide alternatives to the private car."
