TOWN centre developers Great Portland Estates are still confident of a spring start to their £12 million shops scheme in Burnley, despite objections which could delay work.
A public inquiry is due to hear five objections to road closure schemes included in the Curzon Street project next week, which will provide the centre with 90,000 sq ft of new shopping space and new parking.
The council and developers are still negotiating with objectors, who include market tenants, Marks and Spencer and Argos stores, to head off the need for a hearing.
But if it goes ahead as expected and the objections are upheld, the whole project could be considerably delayed.
A report to Burnley's economic and property sub committee says Great Portland are proceeding on the assumption that they will achieve the necessary approvals and have taken the scheme out to tender.
"Tenders are due back at the beginning of February 1998, with an assumed start on site in spring 1998," the report adds.
The public inquiry is due to take place in Burnley Town Hall on Tuesday at 10am.
