ISN'T it amazing? - one isolated incident where a man goes berserk with a gun and, immediately, the whole country demands draconian measures against all gun owners, even though they haven't committed a crime.

But suggest drastic action against people who break the law by drinking and driving and there is a rush of people to defend them. (Letters, January 12).

Drink drivers kill, maim and injure thousands of people every year and only the severest of penalties will make them think twice.

If I had a pound for every time I heard the phrase, "I drive better when I've had a few drinks," I would be a rich man.

No-one is asking anyone to become teetotal, but only that they act in a responsible manner.
