GYM workouts and walking the dog are going on prescription.
Instead of being told to "take one of these three times a day" it will a case of doctors dishing out a dose of exercise.
Swimming, low-impact aerobics, water aerobics and dancing are included in a 12-week fitness routine devised by Health Authority and Leisure Services staff.
Exercise referral co-ordinator Carol Richardson explained: "The scheme involves GPs and practice nurses identifying people whose general health would be much improved by some form of exercise."
John Churnside's doctor told him he was a little overweight, had raised blood pressure and needed to improve his fitness.
John was a little surprised when his GP told him to go to the gym three times a week and take brisk walks with his dog.
Now his heart rate and weight have reduced and he feels much fitter.
He said: "I really enjoyed going to the gym. Before I felt every one of my 38 years. Now I feel 18 again.
"I have been able to look at my general lifestyle, reduced alcohol consumption to a healthier level and as a result have more energy and feel less stressed. I feel better all round."
The scheme is being extended to GP's surgeries throughout the area.
