WITH a name like Mountain, you'd expect him to be a mean climber.
But firefighter Steve, of Northway, Fulwood, went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure a pensioner got home safely.
The father-of-one was helping to rescue a resident of Bowland Court flats, in Larkhill, Blackburn, from the broken-down lift when he noticed pensioner Nan Rushton waiting with her shopping at the foot of the stairs.
He said: "Both lifts had broken down while she was out shopping and she told me she lived on the 12th floor.
"It's quite a way up and she was obviously uneasy about climbing the stairs so I offered to give her a lift - literally.
"I carried her all the way to her door - shopping and all. I didn't think it was such an extraordinary thing to do." He even ran the first few flights.
Nan, 83, couldn't thank her knight in shining armour enough and was amazed by the gesture. She said: "I thought chivalry was dead. It was a lovely gesture - something you don't expect in this day and age.
"I want to say a big thank you to him. He was a very nice chap."
So, would he do it again? "I think I would," Steve added, "but I must admit I was a bit tired by the time we reached her flat!" He says he will visit Nan again with his young son Thomas.
