DUSTY the gerbil, nicknamed after being found dumped in a waste bin in St Helens town centre, has found sanctuary in the town hall. An early morning street sweeper heard the gerbil's cries as he went to empty the bin. Now Dusty is being cared for by kind-hearted council environmental health staff until a new home can be found.
A town hall spokesperson said: "An abandoned gerbil was the last thing our street cleaner expected to find but no doubt Dusty was greatly relieved that his 'tail' has a happy ending."
