TOYS were involved in accidents involving 36,000 children last year.
Now safety-conscious Leigh MP Lawrence Cunliffe has welcomed the Government's new toy safety campaign.
He warns shoppers to look out for dangerous toys in the January sales.
He stresses parents and carers should clear out broken toys before they cause injury and keep rooms and stairs free from clutter because every year thousands trip over toys and injure themselves, adding: "People are looking for sales bargains but it is important to heed three key things:
1 Check the toy for sharp edges and make sure teddy's eyes can't be removed and swallowed by a young child
2 Buy the right toy for the child's age; specific warning about toys being unsuitable for children aged under three is an instruction not a bit of advice
3 Buy from an outlet you can trust not from someone who is here today and gone tomorrow
Advice leaflets are being distributed to doctors' surgeries and playgroups.
