JASON Wilcox could be set for a significant career change at the age of 26, with Blackburn Rovers boss Roy Hodgson earmarking one step back to take two forward for the winger.

Hodgson has given a broad hint that Wilcox will continue in his new left-back role when Rovers visit Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Monday night, taking the view that attack is the best form of defence.

For he admits there is a case for using a more experienced defensive player in away games.

But Wilcox, who adapted superbly to what can only be described as a wing-back role - without the three central defenders - against Aston Villa, is described by Hodgson as "an exceptional talent".

And the manager wants to make the most of that without ruling out a future switch for Damien Duff with Wilcox reverting to the left wing.

The ability and versatility of the duo clearly gives Hodgson more options in his squad.

Wilcox's move didn't happen overnight, though it did come as something of a surprise to the fans.

"It wasn't a quick decision, it's one that has matured," said Hodgson.

"We have good full backs in Valery and Croft but, of course, in Wilcox we have an exceptional player and an exceptional talent.

"He has a magnificent left foot and a very good attitude towards the game. "The coaching staff have always thought that, given a run in that position, if he puts his mind to it and wants to do it he has got the sort of qualities that coaches are looking for in left backs.

"He is tall, he's athletic, he likes to go forward, he deals with the ball very well and he's got a magnificent left foot for playing balls forward. We saw great potential."

Sean Kimberley joined Rovers' youth staff today to replace Chris Sulley with the prime responsibility of overseeing the club's centres of excellence.

"I know Sean from Wolves and Aston Villa. He is a very good coach and I am positive he will be an excellent appointment," said Bobby Downes, head of youth development.

Kimberley, 29, has 10 years experience in the role. He has been working part-time with Aston Villa, combining the duties with a post as a lecturer in sports science and information technology.
