THERE were gold stars all round for staff and pupils at Hippings Methodist Primary School, Oswaldtwistle, after a visit from education watchdogs.

A report by inspectors from Ofsted - the Office for Standards in Education - said the school had many strengths and few weaknesses.

The five-strong inspection team was impressed with the standards of teaching, which in some lessons was described as very good

Pupils were found to progress well and their attainment levels either exceeded or matched national expectations.

The youngsters were also keen to work and well behaved.

Teachers came in for praise from inspectors and were said to be hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated pupils well. The school's positive attitude to pupils' well being and strong links with the local community and methodist church were highlighted.

The inspection report said: "The school has made good provision for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

"It placed a strong emphasis on the whole community and parents were justifiably happy with the values and attitudes it promoted."

Provision for pupils' support, guidance and welfare was applauded for making a positive contribution to their behaviour and personal development.

Among the recommendations for the 231-pupil school were that it improve standards in certain areas of information technology and design and technology.

Chairman of the governors the Rev Richard Bradshaw said: "I am delighted with our Ofsted report which is a credit to the hard work and determination of staff, governors, pupils and parents.

"I am confident the school will continue to provide a good quality of education for the children."
